TP Binoculars

I am determined to find some fun projects to do for the upcoming winter months.  We started by making these little binoculars with empty toilet paper rolls.  I let the boys paint them and then stapled them together, added some yarn and we’ve got ourselves some pretty fun binoculars.

Paper Pumpkins

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Are these not the cutest little pumpkin crafts ever?  My boys had a blast helping me construct these little guys.  It is as simple as cutting your paper into strips and then in half, putting a brad through the bottom of your papers, adding a leave (which we crimped for added effect), and adding a brad to the top.  Love them!

I found this sweet fish idea here.  What an awesome site.  J especially enjoyed this one because there are no lines to stay in.  He is still learning that you aren’t supposed to scribble.  By doing these little craft projects I have already noticed a huge different in Jace’s coloring and cutting skills.

So here is J’s fish…..

Another fun activity to go along with this project is to go to a pet store and check out all the fish.  We didn’t do it this time, but we have gone to pet stores for this purpose before and my boys are always amazed at all the different fish.

So my goal to get through the alphabet by the end of summer didn’t happen.  My boys officially start school next week.  Maybe I can bust out the rest of letters between now and then…..maybe?

E is for elephant!  I found a great template for an elephant craft project.  Click here to see it.  My boys loved coloring and cutting their elephants out.  Isn’t the trunk idea so cool?  We got a laugh out of the hubster with the finger/trunk.  Pretty cool if you ask me.

The “lemon-y” flavor in these muffins is unreal.  If you like lemon, you will like these.  Give them a try:

{Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins}

1 cup whole grain oat flour

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspon salt

1/2 cup vanilla yogurt

3 large egg whites

1/3 cup honey

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon lemon extract

1 tablespoon grated lemon peel

2 teaspoons poppy seeds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.  Mix until combined well.

In a seperate bowl, combine the yogurt, egg whites, honey, vanilla extract, and lemon extract.  Mix with a spoon.

Add flour mixture, stirring until moist.

Stir in the lemon peel and poppy seeds.

Spray muffin tins generously with cooking spray and spoon batter evenly into each one.

Bake for 9 to 11 minutes.  Cool in pan for 5 minutes and then remove.

Want to know the best thing about these beauties?  They are only around 100 calories a piece.  SWEET DOG!  The recipe comes from The Biggest Loser Cookbook, which is A-MAZE-ING.  Really, try them.

No Name Dogs

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

I have no idea what to call these little yummies…Hot-dog in a bun maybe?  Croissants hot dog?  You’ll have to let me know if you have a fabulous name for them and I’ll start using that!  For those of you that haven’t tried these…let me enlighten you!  My 4 year old ate 2 (TWO!!) of them yesterday for lunch.  For him, that is a HUGE amount of food! I was so proud and am determined to keep these 3 ingredients in my fridge at all times!

You’ll need:

1 package of croissants, cheese, & hot dogs

And it is as easy as this:

  1. Preheat your oven to the temperature on the croissant package.
  2. Unroll croissants and squish them down really good, so they are nice and flat.
  3. Add a piece of cheese and then a hot dog and roll the croissant up.
  4. Pop them in the oven for about 8 minutes and chow down on your surprisingly good hot dogs (I never thought I would say hot dogs are good, but really, these are pretty tasty.)

Trial Run

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Do you guys remember how scary the first day of school is?  I remember the first time I went to school with lockers.  Oh man, that was scary!  How about the first time you had to change classrooms?  It makes me sweat just thinking about it.  So here is a quick tip for you parents with children who are about to embark into the big world of lockers and class changes:  Do a trial run.

Looking down a hallway like this can be quite intimidating…

hallway1Nothing will calm your childs nerves more than just doing it.  Most schools have a time period before school starts for the students to come and map out their classes.  While you are there, make sure to get rid of the locker fears by teaching your child how to open the lock.  Take the time to make sure they know what they are doing. This will calm A LOT of first day jitters.

Successful Studying

Star_Children-Studying

If you want your children to get good grades they are going to have to learn the proper way to study.  The sooner they catch on to their study style, the easier school will be.  My husband claims he didn’t learn what worked for him until college.  I am still not sure what works for me.

Here are a few tips to help your child develop good study habits:

  • Turn the TV off.  Make a house rule that when there is studying or homework to be done, the TV needs to be off.
  • What about the radio?  Should it be off?  I would say yes, but according to some specialists, some children seem to function better with the radio turned to a favorite music station.
  • Make phone rules.  No texting or calls when studying.  The only exception to this should be if your child needs to call a classmate for assistance.
  • Designate a specific area for studying and homework.  When I was in school, it was my bed.  Probably not the best idea.  Experts say to make your surrounding as they are in the classroom.
  • Schedule study time.  After spending a long day at school, studying is not what your child wants to do when they get home.  Try having dinner at a set time each night, and then have your children hit the books after that.
  • Consider your child.  For your older children, it wouldn’t be too much to ask that they spend an hour a day on school work.  Younger children would go crazy sitting for that.  Reward them when they finish one subject or assignment with a break.
  • Organize study and homework projects.  Do you not just hate those last minute science projects?  As a student I always waited till the last minute because then I knew my parents would have to help me out.  Yes, I was slightly manipulative.  If you have a big calendar or dry erase bored, you can stay on top of there assignments and projects without creating procrastination stress.

And lastly, here is my favorite tip…drum roll please….

  • Create a mobile desktop.  When I was a kid, I often didn’t get home until dinner time and sometimes even later.  I was always on the go between my sports practices, church activities, dance classes, and whatever else kids like to do.  So how about making a little study center in the car?  Genius idea!  Get a container that has a lid big enough to use as a desk and fill it with all sorts of school supplies:  pencils, pens, paper, calculators, rulers, and whatever else they might need.

School Lunch 101

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

A healthy school lunch is so important for our children.  Sure, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with a bag of potato chips are probably the easiest route to take when packing a lunch.  Unfortunately, they do nothing for our children health wise.  Here are a few ideas to add some variety and more nutrition to their lunches:

  • Swap a side of chips for veggies and dip.  You can buy single serving snack packs at the grocery store that make for great ease.  Or if you are ambitious or being careful with what you spend, cut your own veggies and put some dip in a reusable container.
  • Instead of a bologna sandwich, make a turkey rollup.  Try rolling a few slices of turkey around some string cheese.  Add a few crackers to the lunch bag and you have a much better option than bologna, which is full of fat.
  • Use whole grain bread rather than white bread.  Isn’t white bread the best?  But honestly, it is so full of sugar that it doesn’t do an ounce of good for our children.  Whole grain bread is full of fiber, B vitamins, and iron.
  • Pack some brain food such as cherries, dried apricots, apple slices, or whole grain bread with cheese or peanut butter.

I found  this website which is full of fun food ideas that your children will love!  Some of the fun ideas include a Peanut Butter and Apple Sandwich, Banana and Peanut Butter Wraps, Juicy Fruit Salad, or some Honey Nut Balls.  Go see for youself….I might go make a Banana Peanut Butter Wrap right now.   Oh yum!

Oh and what about storing all this yummy food without it leaking into each other??  Have you seen these??
